Words of Healing

Ho'oponopono

Healing with Ho'oponopono

Ho'oponopono means 'to make things right.' It is a prayer and a Hawaiian practice for forgiveness. It is a powerful mantra for giving you a clean slate. According to Ho'oponopono, everything that is your reality is perceived by your mind. Your connections, the people you know, are affected by your inner self.

Ho’oponopono is a traditional Hawaiian practice centered on reconciliation, forgiveness, and the restoration of balance. While it has roots in ancient indigenous culture as a group process, it is most widely known today as a personal mantra for emotional healing and mental "cleaning."

The word itself translates roughly to "to make right" or "to rectify an error."

The Core Philosophy: 100% Responsibility

The foundational belief of Ho’oponopono is that our external reality is a reflection of our internal subconscious "memories" or programs. Therefore, if we experience conflict, stress, or disharmony in the world, the solution is to look inward and "clean" the part of ourselves that is creating or perceiving that experience.

By taking 100% responsibility for our perceptions, we move from a state of being a victim of circumstances to having the power to heal them through our own consciousness.

The Four Healing Phrases

In its modern, simplified form, the practice involves the mental or vocal repetition of four phrases. These are directed toward the Divine, the Universe, or one's own inner self to clear away negative patterns:

  • "I am sorry" – Acknowledging that a disharmony exists within you.
  • "Please forgive me" – Asking for the release of the internal blocks tied to that memory.
  • "I love you" – Returning to a state of high vibration and compassion.
  • "Thank you" – Expressing gratitude for the clearing and the healing.

The Goal: The "Zero State"

The ultimate aim of the practice is to reach what is often called the Zero State. This is a place of mental clarity and void where one is no longer driven by past trauma, cultural conditioning, or subconscious "loops." In this state, a person is open to inspiration and acts from a place of peace rather than reaction.

Practical Application

Because it is a simple internal mantra, Ho’oponopono can be practiced anywhere and at any time. It is commonly used when:

  • Feeling resentment toward another person.
  • Experiencing anxiety or repetitive negative thoughts.
  • Navigating a difficult professional or personal situation.
  • Seeking to "clear the air" after a disagreement.

By focusing on these four phrases, practitioners aim to shift their internal state, which in turn allows their external relationships and environment to return to a state of Pono—rightness and balance.
